WEB Du Bois Memorial Centre
Meet the father of pan-Africanism.
On visiting this serene, leafy property, it’s not difficult to imagine why Massachusetts-born crusader for social justice William Edward Burghardt Du Bois chose to spend the final years of his life here. Known as ‘the Father of Pan-Africanism’, the socialist, historian and author became a Ghanaian resident in 1961, at the age of 93, following a visit to the country at the invitation of President Kwame Nkrumah. He died here in 1963. The centre comprises the home where Du Bois and his wife lived, the mausoleum in which they are entombed, a simple guesthouse, the Marcus Garvey, offering bed and breakfast, a cultural research centre and an amphitheatre. Visitors can view some of the late civil activist’s personal possessions, photos and papers, before browsing the on-site bookshop and small market, where vendors sell a range of clothes, crafts and fresh produce. Entrance costs GH¢7.
