Social enterprise Trashy Bags turns waste into quirky bags.

Social enterprise Trashy Bags was set up in 2008 as a means of recycling and reusing the endless plastic water and yoghurt wrappers deposited on the streets of Accra, with more than 20 million plastic sachets since having been collected. The refuse is washed and treated before being stitched together to form a huge range of bags and accessories, including everything from shoulder bags and backpacks to rain macs and briefcases. Old canvas banners are also used to produce bags reminiscent of the recycled Freitag products. Buy online or direct from the factory in Abelenkpe, where bags are sold at factory prices, and where you will have the chance to meet some of the 30-strong team.
