The desire to transform the perception of West African art perpetuated by the global art world is the driving force behind Edje Art. African art has often been misrepresented as being substandard and lacking in exquisite creativity and workmanship; a factor that inspired Kukua Ampah to create a platform for what can only be described as chic, avante-gardist sculptures. Her art is one of a kind unique assemblage of pieces that marry traditional cultural African heritage with modernity. They vary between asymmetrical lifelike figures and ornamental manipulations that have been brought to life in proportion and scale through the use of paint, beadwork, wood and brass. Her pieces are often formed from discarded material, and restored with the help of her team of talented local artisans to create organic art pieces.
