Edje Art
A journey of transformation in art
The desire to transform the perception of West African art perpetuated by the global art world is the driving force behind Edje Art. According to owner Kukua Ampah, African art has often been misrepresented as being substandard and lacking in fine creativity and workmanship. It’s a factor that has led her to create a platform for sculptures in her attempt to transform this narrative.
Her art is one-of-a-kind unique assemblage of pieces that marry traditional cultural African heritage with modernity. Often formed from neglected or discarded material, her intimate creations are restored with help from her team of talented local artisans.
They first strip the base pieces before applying various materials onto objects. The results include lifelike figures and ornamental manipulations that have been brought to life through the use of paint, beadwork, wood and brass. Edje Art’s quest is to give a newfound appreciation for African art beyond borders often divided by language, religions, taste and traditions; and they are doing this by offering a fresh perspective on the complexity of African artforms, then showcasing these works to global collectors.
