Gallery 1957

Formidable contemporary arts space in the Kempinski Hotel.

Contemporary art space Gallery 1957’s curatorial focus is on West African artists. A recent solo show featured the work of Kenya’s Kaloki Nyamai, while the group show Homecoming: The Aesthetic of the Cool collected new work by Ghanaian portraitists Amoako Boafo, Kwesi Botchway and Otis Quaicoe. Named after the year Ghana gained independence, the gallery’s initial space, located within the Kempinski Hotel in Gold Coast City, opened on Independence Day 2016. In 2017 a second exhibition and project space was inaugurated in The Galleria Mall, a shopping mall also located within the Kempinski Hotel in Gold Coast City. Autumn 2021 saw the British painter Arthur Timothy marking his debut in the country of his birth, with an exhibition of bold, large-scale oil paintings inspired by black-and-white photographs he found among his father’s papers.
